Two people died and one person was injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash early Wednesday in Dallam County.

At about 5:40 a.m. Aug. 14, a 2004 Toyota Sequoia was heading north on US 385 about eight miles north of Dalhart, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said, when the driver failed to drive in a single lane and the Toyota veered off the roadway and entered the east ditch.

The driver over-corrected the steering in an attempt to get back onto the road, which caused the Toyota to enter a side skid and roll over multiple times, DPS said. Two passengers, who were not wearing seat belts, were ejected from the vehicle.

The passengers, identified as Benjamin Lux, 19, and Camaja Ortiz, 29, of both Dalhart, were pronounced dead at the scene by Dallam County Justice of the Peace Carol Smith.

The driver, Jose Quinilla, 18, of Dalhart, who had been wearing a seat belt, was taken to Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart with serious injuries.

Road conditions were dry and clear, with a posted speed limit of 75 mph at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
