A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the death of an Amarillo bar owner, the 47th District Attorney's Office announced Friday.

A jury found Treycoby Campbell guilty of murder for the shooting incident outside the bar that killed Cindy Jayroe, a "beloved figure in the community" and also a wife, mother, and grandmother, the DA's office said.

"March 7, 2021 should have been just another regular night of work for Cindy Jayroe, long-time owner and manager of Rumors Bar," the DA's office said in a social media post. "On that night, one of the customers at Rumors was Treycoby Campbell. Surveillance video inside the bar showed that Mr. Campbell had a gun with him that night. After an altercation inside the bar, Mr. Campbell left on foot and walked to the corner of the Rumor’s parking lot. He then opened fire with that gun, firing at least 33 rounds in the direction of Rumors. Multiple people, including Cindy Jayroe, were outside. Bullets hit the building, cars, and Cindy. She was taken to the hospital but later died from a gunshot wound."

According to previous reports, Amarillo officers responded to the shooting around 1:30 a.m. outside of the bar at 1500 southwest 10th Ave., where the suspect had fled the scene. Police then secured a murder warrant for Trecoby Leon Campbell after the incident, and he was arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center.

The DA's office said Campbell admitted firing the gun, but claimed there had been another shooter exchanging gunfire. However, evidence found at the scene was consistent with only one gun being fired, and witnesses saw Campbell with a weapon and no one else. The jury found that Campbell had "committed deadly conduct by shooting at the crowd and caused Cindy Jayroe’s death" and "assessed his punishment at 25 years in TDC," the DA's office said.

District Attorney Jason Herring said in the Facebook post, “It is an honor and a great responsibility to prosecute cases where someone’s life has been taken. We are grateful to Cindy’s family for their participation in this process, their patience as we sought justice, and their willingness to share their memories of Cindy with us.”
