In his first official month as Amarillo’s city manager, Grayson Path is unveiling a strategic priority aimed at addressing the city's most pressing challenges. His focus includes revitalizing infrastructure, enhancing public services, and fostering improved communication within city government.

Path, who assumed the role following the departure of Jared Miller, is bringing a fresh perspective to the city’s administration. His initial efforts are centered on tackling issues that have long concerned Amarillo residents, such as wastewater management, road infrastructure, and departmental efficiency.

    Addressing wastewater management issues

Among the foremost concerns Path has to tackle is the city’s waste management system, particularly the issues surrounding Hollywood Road's water treatment plant and the creation of a sustainable solution. With the plant nearing its capacity for wastewater Path recognizes the urgency of implementing a sustainable solution.

“The current system is at a critical juncture,” Path said. “We must develop a plan that addresses immediate needs while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our waste management system. Our objective is to establish a wastewater management system that meets Amarillo’s needs today and will continue to serve us well into the future."

Path is actively engaging with city engineers and environmental experts to explore options for expanding the capabilities of the city's wastewater systems.

A key priority for Path in his role as city manager is finding ways to improve the city's aging wastewater treatment systems so that the area can sustain its population growth.

“We need to proactively upgrade our water infrastructure,” Path emphasized. “This involves investing in new technologies, enhancing water conservation efforts, and ensuring our systems can support a growing population.”

He stressed the importance of collaboration with state and federal agencies to ensure that Amarillo’s water infrastructure remains robust and reliable.

    Enhancing transparency and departmental efficiency

In addition to infrastructure, Path is focused on improving the efficiency of city services and ensuring that all departments operate cohesively. He commended the Community Development Department, led by Jason Riddlespurger, for its efforts in addressing inefficiencies highlighted by a significant embezzlement scandal.

“Jason and his team have done exceptional work in creating checks and balances within their department,” Path said. “Their efforts have improved efficiency and received praise from our funding agencies as a model of excellence.”

The scandal, which involved the embezzlement of over $465,000 by a city employee exploiting a COVID-19 policy change, led to a comprehensive overhaul of the department’s financial procedures. Path is keen on replicating this success across other city departments. He has initiated a series of meetings with department heads to identify areas for similar improvements.

His goal is to create a more streamlined, accountable, and responsive city government.

    Fostering cohesion in city leadership

Uniting the city’s leadership team, which has experienced some division in recent years, is another challenge Path is addressing. He believes that fostering cohesion among city leaders is crucial for effective governance.

“We need to work together as a team,” Path said. “This requires open communication, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to serving the people of Amarillo.”

Path has already begun holding regular meetings with city council members and other key officials to build this sense of cohesion. He emphasizes transparency and collaboration in these meetings, ensuring that all perspectives are considered and that decisions are made in the community’s best interest.

    Engaging with the community

Path also recognizes the importance of engaging directly with Amarillo residents. He has prioritized attending community events and listening to citizen concerns. Building trust with the community is seen as essential for the success of his administration.

“I want the people of Amarillo to know that their voices matter,” Path said. “I’m here to listen, to learn, and to work with the community to make Amarillo the best it can be.”

The community’s response to Path’s approach has been positive. Residents have expressed appreciation for his hands-on engagement and optimism about the city’s direction under his leadership.

    Looking to the future

As Path settles into his role, he is also focusing on long-term goals for Amarillo. His vision includes not only addressing current challenges but also creating a vibrant and thriving city. His plans involve attracting new businesses, improving educational opportunities, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.

“We have a bright future ahead,” Path said. “Achieving this will require hard work, dedication, and a commitment to making informed decisions for our community.”

Path is confident that with the right strategies, Amarillo can overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger. His optimism about the future is matched by his eagerness to implement his vision for the city.

Balancing immediate needs with long-term goals

A central theme of Path’s leadership is balancing the immediate needs of the city with long-term objectives. He understands that while it is crucial to address urgent issues such as wastewater management and water infrastructure, it is equally important to plan for the future.

“We need to think not only about today but also about where we want to be in 10, 20, or even 50 years,” Path said. “That means making strategic investments now that will benefit us in the long run.”

Path is particularly focused on ensuring that Amarillo’s growth is sustainable. He is working with urban planners and economic development experts to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the city’s future, emphasizing responsible growth, environmental stewardship, and a robust local economy.

    A personal touch

Despite the demanding nature of his new role, Path has found time to explore Amarillo and enjoy his new environment. He and his family, who recently joined him in the city, are embracing the “honeymoon phase” of their move. Path has expressed enthusiasm for both the community and the opportunities it offers.

“My family and I are really enjoying Amarillo,” Path said. “We’re excited to be here and to become part of this wonderful community.”

As Path embarks on his tenure as Amarillo’s city manager, his approach reflects a blend of optimism and strategic planning. From addressing immediate infrastructure needs to fostering a more cohesive leadership team, Path’s vision is both forward-looking and community-centered. As he works to build a stronger Amarillo, residents can anticipate a city that is not only more efficient, but also united in its efforts to create a better future for all.
