AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The City of Amarillo announced that an “unauthorized discharge of untreated wastewater” due to a mechanical pump has been contained at the lift station at 7100 Cliffside.

According to city officials, the discharge occurred at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday and was contained by 2 p.m. with the cause of the discharge being the failure of a mechanical pump bearing.

Officials noted that the discharge was 100,000 gallons and no wastewater reached any natural waters or impacted the water supply. The cleanup procedures were noted as complete as of Wednesday morning, including disinfection of the discharge by adding an HTH water treatment to neutralize potential harmful contaminants.

Officials also noted the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified and is working with the city to minimize environmental impacts.
