Will it rain in Amarillo? Heat could yield to showers late week

It's been hot this week across the Panhandle and South Plains, with temperatures peaking at well over 100 degrees Monday and Tuesday in some locations. The temperature in Lipscomb in the far northeastern Panhandle hit 110 degrees Monday, according to the West Texas Mesonet, with many other High Plains sites reaching temperatures nearly that high.

But West Texans could soon get some relief as the scorching heat is expected to give way to milder temps and rain showers Wednesday through the end of the week.

High temperatures are expected to drop from the hundreds into the mid-90s in Lubbock and low 90s in Amarillo Wednesday after a cold front moves through Tuesday night. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region late Wednesday, with chances hovering around 50%, according to the National Weather Service.

"Thunderstorm chances increase early Wednesday evening, with the highest potential for rain in the far southwestern Texas Panhandle and the northern South Plains," reads an NWS forecast.

Temperatures will remain cooler throughout the week, with highs in the mid-80s to lower 90s in the Lubbock area and low-to-mid 80s in Amarillo.

Chances for showers and thunderstorms will also linger through the end of the week, perhaps into next. Lubbock will see a 40% chance on Thursday, down to 20% on Friday but jumping back up to 50% Saturday with a slight chance early next week. Amarillo can expect similar precipitation chances.

"While there will be chances for showers and thunderstorms each day, not everyone will see rain every day," the NWS said.
