AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Drivers in Texas saw a decrease in gas prices this week with an average of $3.12/gallon for regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, which is a 6-cent decrease compared to last week and 5 cents less compared to this day last year, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

According to AAA Texas, drivers in Amarillo are paying the second-least on average at $2.94/gallon and drivers in Lubbock were paying the least on average of $2.91/gallon for gas with prices staying stagnant compared to last week. AAA Texas reported that drivers in El Paso were paying the most on average at $3.32/gallon.

Nationally, the average price per gallon was $3.51/gallon on Thursday, marking a 3-cent decrease compared to last week and 5 cents less compared to this day last year.

According to AAA Texas, recent data from the Energy Infomation Administration stated that gas demand has dropped to 8.7 million barrels per day and overall fuel demand is approximately 1% lower than last summer. Officials noted that the supply of gasoline has increased week-to-week and with demand decreasing and supply rising, gas prices may continue to decline through July.

“Gas price averages are slightly lower compared to one year ago,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Demand for fuel is down week-to-week while supplies have increased.”
