AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Better Business Bureau in Amarillo released tips to spot the red flags of text messages that may be fake or a scam.

According to officials from the BBB in Amarillo, the BBB in Amarillo has seen a rise in these text scams that appear to be from a bank, an employment offer, or general promotional offers. Officials noted that most of these texts use a sense of urgency or even scare tactics to get people to respond.

The BBB in Amarillo noted that these tips can help spot scam messages:

    1. Check the sender’s email address. Does it match the domain they are claiming to be from?
    2. Be cautious if the text claims you won a prize or have been chosen for an award. Tugging on emotions is a tactic to get you to respond without checking.
    3. Watch for links that look suspicious – they can appear to be from Apple, Microsoft or other well-known companies. Watch for messages with misspelled words or poor grammar.
    4. Trust your instincts. If the situation sounds too good to be true or you are not sure about the site, delete it. It’s better than losing money or personal account info.
