Stebbins remains steadfast in rebuilding after school fire
Three weeks after the tragic fire that razed the Tukurngailnguq School and teacher housing in Stebbins to the ground, the community proves their resilience and resolve in the face of tragedy. With school less than a month away, numerous entities are rallying to get kids to class on time with hopefully some normalcy as the school is rebuilt over the next three years.
Meet Emily Mailman, Marine Habitat Resource Specialist for the NOAA Restoration Center
Emily Mailman is a Marine Habitat Resource Specialist based in Anchorage, Alaska. She supports the work of the Office of Habitat Conservation’s Restoration Center in Alaska. I provide technical assistance to our partners working on community habitat restoration projects. When I explain my job to my family, I tell them that the work I do helps salmon move further upstream, where they can access more spawning habitat.
Medical student gets firsthand training in Bethel
Stephen Compton, the son of Bethel’s Dr. David Compton, is an Alaska WWAMI medical student. WWAMI stands for “Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho”, and since July 1st, Compton has been training closely with Dr. Megan Young at Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital in Bethel as part the Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP), a month-long elective for WWAMI medical students interested in rural medicine.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Thursday was a brief break between storms for Southcentral Alaska. A new storm pushed across Western Alaska on Thursday. Bethel dealt with record heat this week, and now will see an abrupt shift to rain. Through Thursday afternoon, Bethel has had about a half-inch of rain (0.48″).
AARP is Advocating for Residential Utility Customers
AARP formally intervened in the Chugach Electric Rate Case currently before the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to fight for fair treatment of residential customers. AARP is the only party in this case who is fighting specifically on behalf of residential customers. AARP argued that the way Chugach has proposed to allocate costs and design rates favors commercial customers and significantly shifts costs and higher rate increases to residential customers.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Brain Bus pulled into Fairbanks on Wednesday with its traveling team of specialists. Their mission - to reach out to a hidden epidemic. “The purpose of the Brain Bus is to get services for people with brain injuries out into rural Alaska,” said Alaska Brain Injury Consortium Executive Director Adam Grove. “There are very little resources, very little awareness about brain injury so we envision the Brain Bus as a way to go to a community, bring experts, live in the bus, work in the bus, so that’s what we’ve been doing.”
