Is there anything better than a chocolate chip cookie? Probably not—unless you count having two or more!

And this Sunday, August 4, you have the perfect excuse to indulge, as it's National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. As the top cookie on Ranker.com and the favorite treat in a recent YouGov survey of over 1,500 U.S. adults, chocolate chip cookies reign supreme.

They even beat out classics like eggs and bacon and lasagna in popularity.

So, how did this beloved cookie come to be?

The story usually points to Ruth Wakefield, who, in the 1930s, ran the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. She’s credited with inventing the chocolate chip cookie by chopping up a semi-sweet chocolate bar and mixing the pieces into her Butter Drop Do cookie dough. In 1938, her recipe was published, and Nestlé started promoting it, embedding it on their packaging.

However, some evidence suggests that chocolate chip cookies may have been around even earlier.

In her 2017 book, "BraveTart: Iconic American Desserts" pastry chef Stella Parks unearthed early references to similar cookies in supermarket ads from the 1930s and even recipes for "Chocolate Jumbles" from as far back as 1877. Despite this, Wakefield’s recipe has undeniably left a lasting legacy.

To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, several places are offering tasty deals:

- DoubleTree by Hilton: Since 1986,DoubleTree has been giving out complimentary chocolate chip cookies to its guests. This Sunday, both guests and non-guests can grab a free original warm cookie or a gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan version from any DoubleTree hotel.

- Great American Cookies: With over 400 locations, Great American Cookies is running a sweet deal: buy one slice of their Original Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake and get another one free. Just mention the deal in-store at participating locations.

- Fazoli’s: This Italian quick-service restaurant will include a free chocolate chip cookie with any purchase on Sunday.

- Pieology: If you're a member of the Pie Life Rewards loyalty program with Pies and Perks status, you can snag a free freshly baked cookie with any Craft Your Own Pizza purchase. You can also choose an alternative perk like a side salad or a non-alcoholic beverage if cookies aren't your thing.

- Tiff's Treats: The Austin-based cookie company is offering some sweet discounts through Sunday—30% off cookies and 50% off orders of a dozen or more. Plus, if you visit one of their retail locations, you can "Skip for a Chip" and get a free chocolate chip cookie simply by skipping.
