Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced several significant vehicle recalls, including a major recall affecting over 100,000 BMW vehicles due to a potential fire risk from an overheated starter motor.

If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is affected by any of these recalls, you can check USA TODAY’s automotive recall database or search directly on the NHTSA website using your vehicle identification number (VIN) for the most current information.

Here’s a summary of the recalls issued by NHTSA from August 4 to August 10:

Chrysler is recalling 2,852 2023 Dodge Challenger vehicles due to a problem with the left rear seat back potentially failing to lock in the upright position. This defect could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The vehicles in question do not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 207, "Seating Systems." Dealers will inspect and adjust the seat back latch striker at no cost to owners.

Notification letters are expected to be sent out by August 15. For more information, owners can contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403, referencing recall number 38B.

Gulf States Toyota is recalling 33,848 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years, including several Toyota models like the 4Runner and GR Supra, due to inaccuracies in the load carrying capacity modification label.

An incorrect weight value could lead to overloading, increasing the risk of a crash. This issue affects vehicles that have GST accessories and does not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." New labels will be mailed to owners, with notifications expected by September 16.

For assistance, owners can reach out to GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074, citing recall number 24R2.

    BMW Recall: Overheating Starter Motor

BMW is recalling 105,588 vehicles due to a risk associated with the starter motor, which can overheat from an electrical overload if it fails. This overheating could potentially ignite nearby combustible materials, increasing the risk of a fire.

Affected models include various 2020 and 2021 series, such as the 340Xi, 740i, 840i, and X5. BMW will update the vehicle software to address this issue. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent by September 23.

Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for further details.

For up-to-date information on these recalls or to check if your vehicle is affected, visit the NHTSA website or contact your vehicle manufacturer directly.
