One of the newest exhibitions at the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center is the cumulation of a mother and son’s artistic undertakings.

“Mére et fils” is a collection of 76 vibrant oil paintings by Rhea and David Gary that embody the spirit and “natural beauty” of Louisiana’s landscapes.

Rhea is a post-impressionist artist who has spent over thirty years memorializing swaps, marshes, bayous and all of Louisiana’s natural gems with colorful scenes. Rhea said in a release that her goal is to nurture connectivity between the state’s land and those who reside on it.

“Painting is my way to call attention to the beauty and uniqueness of our earth and the urgent need to protect and restore it,” she said. “Capturing all of this color, mood, and excitement in paint keeps me ever mindful of the many ways that our environment is inseparable from life.”

Led by passionate example, her son David followed in her footsteps.

“Having grown up in south Louisiana, the landscape of the South is ingrained in my soul, especially the marsh and cypress-lined waters,” he said.

Director of Cultural Affairs Payton Dodds said the exhibit will instill a “warm appreciation for the natural charm that surrounds us” in audiences.

“Their work invokes the desire to explore these exquisite landscapes and acknowledge the vast beauty so close to home.”

Those at Historic City Hall were inspired by the “splendor and magnificence of Louisiana’s diverse landscapes” showcased in the oil paintings.

“Their use of dramatic color brings a new elegance to the portrayals of bayous, marshlands, lakes, and other Louisiana scenery.”

“Mére et fils” is also an opportunity to witness how talent and inspiration can be passed down generationally.

Dodds said you Rhea’s influence on David’s paintings is clear through his brushwork, contrasting colors and “love for Louisiana landscapes.”

The exhibition will be available for viewing until September 21.

Also on display on the second floor of Historic City Hall is “Finding Home” presented by Gallery by the Lake and “Artwork by Ohso” presented by the Black Heritage Gallery.

The Historic City Hall, 1001 Ryan St, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

    Admission is free.
