A high-pressure system combined with dry air over the region will allow temperatures to soar over the coming days in Southwest Louisiana.

The National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office said high temperatures up to nearly 100 degrees will be possible each afternoon through the weekend. Heat indices between 108 and 112 degrees are possible.

These dangerous heat index values could bring about heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and prolonged time outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.

Rain chances are less than 10 percent today through Sunday.

The agency said it is also keeping its eye on a tropical wave over the open Atlantic that’s forecast to move westward towards the eastern Caribbean. There is a 20 percent chance for tropical cyclone formation over the next seven days.

No impacts are expected for southern or central Louisiana and southeast Texas over the next seven days.
