On June 14th, Luke Combs released his fifth studio album, Fathers & Sons, gaining high praise from fans. With the album surrounding fatherhood and the memories made along the way, the country singer continues to expand his grip on the genre. But before Combs took the stage with Tracy Chapman or even released his first studio album, he was nothing more than a college kid trying to figure out what his future looked like. And while some might not have known him at the time, it seems that the talent of Combs was always there.

While attending Appalachian State, Combs spent the majority of his time either studying or playing at local bars. Trying to find his footing in the industry, the singer decided to cover “I Don’t Want This Night To End.” At the time, Bryan’s song was a hit on the radio. But for Combs, it was just the start of a career that is ongoing. As for his buddy, Adam Church, he continues to play and even appeared in the music video for “Doin’ This.”

Looking at their performance, which received over 300,000 likes, fans loved the early years of Combs, writing, “This ole boy went from a little known cover singer to a well known Country star. People in the next generation will talk about how great of a singer you were and I know it.” Another person added, “This dude is amazing he took an up beat song and made it into a really chill relaxed song and I love it major props dude.”

Luke Combs Recalls Spending Time With Willie Nelson

Besides watching his career explode, Combs also received the chance to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in country. He once recalled visiting Willie Nelson at his house. Speaking on The Dale Jr. Download podcast, the singer joked about how they spent time together in Hawaii. “I walked down the hallway in the garage and it’s only Willie Nelson in there. There’s nobody else in there. It’s this garage room, and he’s just sitting there watching TV on this little TV above the refrigerator sitting at the poker table. I walk in just holding this thing of beer, he was just like ‘Oh, hey man.'”

While finding the moment surreal, Combs insisted, “There was no like, who are you? What’s going on? And we just talked for 20-some odd minutes and nobody was in there…”
