Few albums in the rock genre have inspired songwriters and artists alike quite like these six albums. While this list would be endless if we included all of the most inspiring pieces of work that aspiring songwriters should listen to, these six albums are quite special and should be considered essential listening. Let’s take a deep dive into six of the most inspiring rock albums for aspiring songwriters!

    1. ‘The White Album’ by The Beatles

When it comes to rock albums that are perfect for aspiring songwriters, The Beatles (also known as The White Album) is one of the most essential. Everyone should listen to this album at least once in their lives, regardless of their songwriting aspirations. It’s an absolutely incredible piece of work that was way ahead of its time. It’s been decades since it was released in 1968, and it still has such strong listening quality.

    2. ‘Electric Warrior’ by T-Rex

T-Rex’s Marc Bolan does not get enough credit for how much he influenced the psychedelic folk movement in the 1970s. The 1971 album Electric Warrior was the blueprint for the genres and musicians that spawned from the heyday of psych-folk. Not only is Bolan’s guitar-playing prowess commendable on this album, but the album as a whole is a lesson in writing excellent melodies.

    3. ‘Lion And The Cobra’ by Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor was often seen as a political music activist over a pop star, and she even agreed. But, O’Connor rarely got the credit she deserved for her vocal prowess. Lion And The Cobra is a great example of her vocal range, as well as her talent for writing songs that balance mood, melody, and musical dynamics beautifully.

    4. ‘Either/Or’ by Elliot Smith

We can’t have a list of inspiring rock albums that aspiring songwriters need to hear without mentioning Elliot Smith’s 1997 album Either/Or. It’s so beautifully written. Smith managed to capture the essence of melancholy perfectly. It’s quite the heartbreaking record, so tread with caution.

    5. ‘Loveless’ by My Bloody Valentine

This 1991 album by My Bloody Valentine is the blueprint for any shoegaze songwriter. The amplification, the lyricism, the composition of it all! There isn’t an album quite like it. If you want to improve your songwriting ability outside of just lyricism, this is the album to listen to for some inspiration.

    6. ‘Led Zeppelin IV’ by Led Zeppelin

Most people know who Led Zeppelin are. Quite a few have heard this famous 1971 album, too. If you haven’t, it’s definitely essential listening. Younger songwriters could benefit significantly from thoroughly listening to Led Zeppelin IV, as it’s one of the best rock albums of all time. The vocals and instrumentation are perfect, but the songwriting is particularly incredible. This is also a great example of what a band with clear intercommunication can come up with.
