On the morning of August 11, Carrie Underwood made a surprise visit to a local Franklin, Tennessee community church. Parishioners of Rolling Hills Community Church witnessed Underwood leading their choir in song that morning, singing “Goodness of God” by the Christian label Bethel Music. Check out the video of her performance during the church service below.

Underwood appeared at Rolling Hills in a simple beige dress and minimal makeup, which is a departure from her usual bedazzled stage presence. In this way, she highlighted her connection to her faith as she sang for the congregation.

One churchgoer posted a video of Underwood at her church on Instagram. In the caption she wrote, “Unexpected blessing this morning the voice of an angel… I always get to church early to hear the music and today was a little different!”

Carrie Underwood Reveals the Song that Opened the Door for Her to Sing About Faith

During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Carrie Underwood explored some of her favorite songs from her own career and what they mean to her. She spoke about the song she loves to perform live (“Before He Cheats”) as well as the song she’s most proud of, which also allowed her to put more of her faith into her music.

When asked about the song she’s most proud of, Underwood revealed that it’s “Jesus Take the Wheel.” She explained, “I feel like that set up an entire career of being able to sing songs about faith … I didn’t even realize how important it was at the time,” adding, “But I’ve since gotten to make a gospel album, and sing songs like that. I feel like that’s what started it all.”

She elaborated on the song, sharing that it spent a long time at No. 1 on the charts and how it resonated with so many of her fans. “I felt like I arrived,” she admitted.

Carrie Underwood has since arrived again—on American Idol, though now she’ll be behind the judges table instead of in front of it. She’s slated to take Katy Perry’s place on the show, and shared what kind of judge she’ll be during her tenure.

Sharing that she “can’t lie,” she then admitted, “I feel like I’ll be very honest, but hopefully I can be very constructive and encouraging.”
