When Post Malone came onto the scene with his debut hip-hop single “White Iverson” he received mixed reviews from artists and fans alike. They called him a “culture vulture” and doubted his authenticity. With F-1 Trillion on the horizon, he is seeing no such issues in the country music world. Instead, he’s being wholeheartedly accepted by legacy artists and new acts alike.

This acceptance was on full display when Malone made his Grand Ole Opry debut last night (August 14). He shared the hallowed stage with Lainey Wilson to perform their duet “Nosedive” from his forthcoming album. He also joined Vince Gill for “One More Last Chance” during last night’s show. You can see him performing the honky tonk barnburner “Be My Baby Tonight” with John Michael Montgomery below.

The clip above shows Montgomery sharing a few words with Malone before kicking off the song. “My daughter is a huge fan,” he tells Posty. “It’s nice to be invited here to sing along with you. And I know which one you want to do. So, let’s get this party started.”

John Michael Montgomery and Post Malone Do a ‘90s Classic Justice

John Michael Montgomery has been performing this song since the ‘90s and Post Malone sounded like he was just as familiar with the tune. He nailed the fast-talking chorus and added a little Texas twang to his voice while he was doing it. Moments like this are the reason country musicians are ready to welcome him with open arms.

Richard Fagan and Ed Hill wrote “Be My Baby Tonight” and Montgomery released it as the third single from his 1994 album Kickin’ It Up. It went to No. 1 on the country chart giving Montgomery his second chart-topper from the album and kicking off a streak of four consecutive No. 1 singles.

Kickin’ It Up was Montgomery’s most successful album. It topped the all-genre Billboard 200 chart as well as the publication’s Top Country Albums chart. Along with “Be My Baby Tonight” it produced the ‘90s classics “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” “I Can Love You Like That,” and his rendition of “I Swear.”
