Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres Tour has just become the highest-grossing tour in the rock genre in all of music history. This is quite possibly the biggest feat in the “Viva La Vida” hitmakers’ 27-year-long career.

The alternative rock band’s most recent tour has grossed approximately $945.7 million. They have also sold over 8.8 million tickets since the tour first began in March of 2022. With those numbers, Coldplay just officially claimed the highest-grossing rock tour of all time. That impressive record was previously held by British musician Elton John. His profitable Farwell Yellow Brick Road Tour grossed a total of $939 million from 2018 to 2023.

And Coldplay isn’t done, yet. The tour is still going strong with 21 more concerts scheduled. There is a very good chance that the band will be on the fast track to become the very first rock band in history to hit the billion-dollar status for a single tour and potentially sell over 10 million tickets.

Is Coldplay the Most Successful Touring Band in History?

Not exactly. Coldplay’s current tour is the highest-grossing rock tour in history, followed by Elton John and U2. However, they are not the overall most successful touring band in history.

The record for the highest revenue for a rock band goes to the Irish band U2. Their collective tours as of 2024 boast a nominal gross of $2.37 billion and over 26.84 million tickets sold. The Rolling Stones are a close second, with a nominal gross of $2.16 billion and 22.13 million tickets sold as of 2022. Elton John, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and Coldplay follow in terms of nominal gross earnings.

Taylor Swift is likely going to hold the record for the highest-grossing tour, period, by the end of this year. The Eras Tour is likely going to hit well beyond the $2 billion mark in sales by the time it ends later in 2024, unless something apocalyptic happens.

The next stop on Coldplay’s current Music Of The Spheres Tour will be on August 17, 2024 at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany. The Europe, UK, Australia, and New Zealand leg of the tour will run until November 16, 2024 in Auckland, New Zealand at Eden Park. Coldplay’s newest album, Moon Music, is slated for release on October 4.
