In April 2022, Billy Strings played a show at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California. During the show, he brought out a special guest—none other than Post Malone, who, two years later, would have a grand entrance into the world of country music. However, on April 13, he got a little more bluegrassy with Billy Strings instead.

Strings introduced Post, who joined him on stage with a guitar and a drink in his hand. The two embraced to cheers from the crowd. “I found this guy lurking around backstage,” Strings told the audience, adding, “I figured we better drag him up here to f—ing sing for you.”

“Billy Strings is the best to ever f—ing do it,” Post Malone said. He then suggested they do a Johnny Cash song, and the two started in on “Cocaine Blues.” Post took the lead first, proving early on that he can take a more country approach to his vocals. The crowd went wild, singing along to the verses and cheering him on.

For the instrumental break, Strings showed off his stellar picking abilities, navigating the song with ease. Strings’ mandolin player had a moment as well. The band took a delightful turn with this cover; all it needed was a jug to really round everything out.

Post Malone Has Long Been Interested in the Country World, But His New Album Marked His Grand Entrance to the Genre

Flash forward to 2024, and Post Malone released his first country album, F-1 Trillion. He worked with a slew of great country, Americana, and bluegrass artists on the album, like Chris Stapleton, Sierra Ferrell, and Tim McGraw. Additionally, he reunited with Billy Strings on the song “M-E-X-I-C-O.”

The song is a rollicking tune featuring Strings’ signature guitar work and a fun, hilarious narrative. Fans in the comments of the YouTube video were ecstatic to see Strings on a song with Post Malone, and shared their thoughts.

“This song is going to get used in a movie soon,” one person wrote. “Billy Strings is a GOAT. Please make him a regular on all future albums,” another fan wrote. More fans commented on the humor in the song, with one writing, “Definitely Post’s funniest song…..love it.”
