The tribute concert to Toby Keith which was filmed on July 29 is airing tonight, August 28, on NBC. Krystal Keith, Toby’s daughter, took the stage to honor her father during the concert. To celebrate her strength to get up and perform, here’s a look at two times when Krystal and her father sang together.

Toby Keith and Krystal Duet “Mockingbird” at 2004 CMA Awards

At the 2004 CMA Awards, Toby Keith brought his daughter up on stage to sing “Mockingbird” from his Greatest Hits 2 album that year. The song is a play on the nursery rhyme that details all the things a father will buy for his child, starting with a mockingbird. However, the Keiths’ version was jazzy and upbeat, with father and daughter trading verses back and forth.

Krystal was only 19 when she performed “Mockingbird” at the CMAs, but she quickly proved that she could hold her own at country music’s biggest night. Her vocals were strong with an impressive range, which she has retained over the years. Toby looked on as they concluded the performance, gesturing to his daughter as if to say “Krystal Keith, everybody,” highlighting her talent. The two embraced lovingly, with Toby pressing a kiss to Krystal’s forehead and proudly saying, “That’s my girl.”

One user in the YouTube comments wrote, “I remember watching this live, thinking what a wonderful memory for those two!! Going to miss this man’s music!!”

Singing “Cabo San Lucas” in 2013

“Cabo San Lucas” was originally a song off of Toby Keith’s 2008 album That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy. In 2013, Krystal Keith recorded a cover for her album Whiskey & Lace, and invited her dad to perform the song with her that year.

Krystal launched into the first verse with her strong voice while Toby joined in on the chorus. They did a back and forth of Toby saying “Where?” with Krystal singing “Cabo San Lucas.” In a later video on you YouTube channel, Krystal explained the meaning behind her cover of “Cabo San Lucas.”

“I couldn’t go one whole album—especially my first album—without having a song about Cabo,” she explained at the time. “Our family is so well known for traveling to Cabo, it’s our second home [and] I’ve grown up going there my whole life … This song is so bluesy and it’s real islandy, it’s a cool tune.”

She then explained a little of the story of her cover. “It’s just about me being down in Cabo, and I have this one that got away, and I’m basically letting him know that if he ever wants to hook back up he can come down and bring his friends and I’ll be there,” she explained. “I’m down here in Cabo playing my guitar in bars and living life, and hoping that he’ll come down. It’s just a sweet little love song,” she added.
