The country music world raised their red solo cups to the heavens when news broke of Toby Keith’s passing. The iconic country star died in February at age 62 after battling stomach cancer for more than two years. In July, some of Nashville’s biggest acts converged on Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to honor the “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer’s life and legacy. Tonight (Wednesday, Aug. 28), that star-studded tribute became available to viewers. Tyler Hubbard led Jelly Roll and HARDY—among others—in a rousing rendition of the hit Keith called “so stupid it’s good.”

You can’t have a Toby Keith tribute concert without “Red Solo Cup.” For the performance, Tyler Hubbard led an all-star cast consisting of Jordan Davis, Jelly Roll, HARDY, songwriters Jim and Brett Beavers, and the Warren Brothers.

The former Florida Georgia Line member stumbled over the second verse, but made an impressive recovery. “We can’t do Toby like this,” Hubbard said.

Jelly Roll “clinked” red solo cups with audience members as the crowd sang along: Hey, red Solo cup is cheap and disposable / In 14 years, they are decomposable / And unlike my home, they are not foreclosable / Freddy Mac can kiss my a–, whoo!

It was a much-needed moment of levity in a night that was alternately somber and celebratory.

“So Stupid It’s Good”: How Toby Keith Felt About “Red Solo Cup”

Love it or hate it, “Red Solo Cup” leaves a lasting impression. Toby Keith was self-aware about the 2011 hit, off his 15th studio album Clancy’s Tavern. An ode to the perennial beer-pong tournament staple, Keith called it “the stupidest song I’ve ever heard in my life.”

“But it’s so stupid it’s good,” said the multi platinum-selling artist in 2014. He added, “It’s like nursery rhyme stupid.”

Keith wasn’t wrong. “Red Solo Cup” went triple platinum and became the two-time Entertainer of the Year’s final crossover hit before his death.

It’s unlikely the “Beer For My Horses” singer would have minded Tyler Hubbard’s momentary lapse in memory. The “Big Dog Daddy” always knew “Red Solo Cup” was meant to be sung in large, drunken crowds—where memory lapses come with the territory.
