Currently a member of Los Angeles-born classic rock band the Eagles, Vince Gill has one of the sweetest touches when it comes to songwriting. The Hugo, Oklahoma-born country artist has a keen sense of creativity. He delivers his tunes like clouds deliver rain but with each offering, something assuredly grows in you and you leave the experience better, deeper.

Here below, we wanted to dive into three songs from the bluegrass artist-turned-country star. Three songs that tug at your heartstrings and make your eyes and ears open up to the possibility of what subtly can do as art form. Indeed, these are three country songs from Vince Gill that will play for eternity.

“Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away” from I Still Believe in You (1992)

This No. 1 country song is one of both hope and realism. Love is a hard thing to keep going forever and this song recognizes that reality but also aims to work harder to make the fires continue to smolder. Using his signature smooth voice, Gill sings over quintessential 1990s country ballad about life getting in the way of romance. On the tune, he offers,

We’ve been up all night long

Trying to solve a problem, well, it’s almost dawn

Ain’t no time for sleeping if our love is wearing thin

‘Cause I ain’t giving up, you ain’t giving in

Don’t let our love start slipping, love start slipping away

‘Cause the life we’ve been living gets harder every day

Don’t let our love start slipping, love start slipping away

“One More Last Chance” from I Still Believe in You (1992)

This twangy country song was released on Gill’s 1992 breakout LP I Still Believe in You. Featuring rollicking electric guitars and Gill’s smooth voice, the track is about a relationship that’s on the way out and the singer is asking for just one more chance—in fact, he’s begging. And on the tune, which hit the No. 1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, Gill sings about his party lifestyle and his hope for reconciliation, offering,

    First she hid my glasses

‘Cause she knows that I can’t see

She said you ain’t goin’ nowhere boy

‘Til you spend a little time with me

Then the boys called from the honky tonk

Said there’s a party goin’ on down here

Well she might’ve took my car keys

But she forgot about my old John Deere

So give me just a one more last chance

    Before you say we’re through

I know I drive you crazy baby

It’s the best that I can do

We’re just some good ol’ boys, a makin’ noise

    I ain’t a runnin’ ’round on you

Give me just a one more last chance

    Before you say we’re through

“The Heart Won’t Lie” from It’s Your Call (1992)

This easy-listening duet appeared on Reba McEntire’s 1992 LP It’s Your Call and features the red-headed country star singing with Gill. Soaring, sweeping vocals mix and blend like two jet engines, as these two stars in the genre combine to make something so appealing. As a result, the tune hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. And on the love song, the two sing together,

You try to live your life from day to day

But seeing you across the room tonight

    Just gives me away

    ‘Cause the heart won’t lie

Sometimes life gets in the way

But there’s one thing that won’t change

    I know, I’ve tried

    The heart won’t lie

    You can live your alibi

Who can see you’re lost inside

    A foolish disguise?

    The heart won’t lie
