Bruce Springsteen Contributes Cover Song for Benefit Album of Jesse Malin’s Work

Bruce Springsteen is just one of many artists who will be contributing music to an album celebrating the work of Jesse Malin, best known as the vocalist for D Generation. Malin suffered a spinal stroke in 2023 which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Now, a group of musicians and friends has banded together to release an album of Malin’s songs, donating the proceeds to the Jesse Malin Sweet Relief fund.

Bruce Springsteen is just the first to release his contribution to Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin. He recorded “She Don’t Love Me Now” alongside Jake Clemons of the E Street Band on saxophone and Malin’s own band backing him up.

The song was originally released in 2015 on the album New York Before the War. “Bruce gave it that Stax-soul-thing that we were dreaming of when we recorded the original,” said Malin in a press release, per a report from Pitchfork. “It’s so surreal to me.”

Malin continued, “Bruce’s generosity, honesty, and support are equally as powerful as his songwriting and performing. Bruce is one of the guys. He walks it like he talks it. You spend some time with him, and it feels like you’ve known him for years. He’s like my friends in Queens, sitting around talking about Sinatra, the Clash, and the Pogues. He has that passion and excitement for life.”

Along with Bruce Springsteen, a slew of other incredible artists are coming together for the album. Bleachers, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello, The Hold Steady, Tom Morello, Counting Crows, Dinosaur Jr., The Wallflowers, Spoon, and Rancid will also be contributing covers.

Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin is due out on September 20. On Jesse Malin’s official website, he said of the album, “As always in my songs, the themes are all there— transcendence, positivity and global unity through music. This is what I love to do, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep doing it.”

Malin is also making a return to performing on December 1 and 2. He’ll be joined by his band and a selection of guests at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan for a special two-night show.
