Zach Top kicked open the swinging doors of the country music world in April with Cold Beer & Country Music. As the album opener suggests, the collection sounds like the radio back in 1994. However, Top isn’t trying to revive a certain era of country music. Instead, he is following in the footsteps of the artists who influenced him. Today (August 30), he took another step down that trail with the new single “Beer for Breakfast.”

Top hasn’t announced a new project nor is this song on Cold Beer & Country Music. So, this could signal the beginning of another album cycle. On the other hand, it could be a fun song to take everyone into the Labor Day Weekend. Either way, the Washington native has been playing “Beer for Breakfast” during his live shows and fans are loving it.

In a press release, Zach Top shared a little about this song’s meaning. However, it seems that listeners should be able to piece it together by simply listening to the track. “Don’t go looking for some deep message in this song,” Top shared. “This is a fun-loving, country-ass way of lettin’ people know if they didn’t already, I like beer!” he added.

“People have been lovin’ this thing on the live shows and I hope they love the single just as much and that it puts them in the mood to pop the top on a cold one and forget about their troubles for a little while,” Top said of his hopes for the song.

    Top’s Sound Comes Naturally

During an interview with American Songwriter this year, Zach Top said he isn’t trying to revive ‘90s country. Instead, he is just doing what comes naturally.

“I wouldn’t say I decided to go with a ‘90s sound. That’s the stuff that made me fall in love with country music,” Top said. “All those guys I loved in the ‘90s, I tried to go back and find their influences. Those guys were listening to Haggard and Jones and Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Ray Price, and stuff like that when they were coming up. So, I tried to go back to that stuff and get what I could out of there,” he added.

“I think through all my studying and delving back into all that stuff, I found my own little version of it. That’s all I know how to do. When I write or sing or play, that’s just what comes out,” Top explained.
