“People Looked At Me Crazy”: Lainey Wilson on Her Unique Style and the One Thing She’ll Never Wear

With the recent release of her newest album Whirlwind, Lainey Wilson continues to dominate country music. Holding numerous awards, the singer crossed a massive milestone in 2024 as she brought home a Grammy Award for her album Bell Bottom Country. Known for her unique style and her bell-bottom pants, Wilson recently discussed how much she loved her pants and the one item she will never wear.

Speaking with People, Wilson explained how her fashion sense came about when trying to break into country music. “A few years in [to her music career], I realized pretty quickly that as a decent female singer-songwriter, that’s not enough. I needed to do something that made me stand out and stand apart.” Deciding to embrace the bell bottoms, Wilson eventually gained traction and according to the country star, she hopes to be wearing the pants when she is 90.

Although loving her style, Wilson admitted not every person was a fan. “There were times where people looked at me crazy, thinking, ‘What in the world are you doing? Looks like you stepped out of the ’70s.’ But I just kept doing it because I believed in it. I believed that eventually if you throw something against the wall long enough that it will stick.”

The One Word Lainey Wilson Embraced

While enjoying her many pairs of bell bottoms, Wilson isn’t afraid to wear other clothes. “At the end of the day, I’m not going to say that I’m not going to wear anything, because who knows?” When asked if there was anything she wouldn’t wear, Wilson insisted, “You ain’t going to see me in skinny jeans.”

As for her new album, Wilson took a moment to look back on her rise to stardom over the last few years. Somewhat shocked over her success in country music, Wilson used those emotions in her new album Whirlwind. She said, “The word that I keep using to describe the last couple years is ‘whirlwind.’ When I am talking to a stranger about my journey the last few years, it seems like everyone is saying the word ‘whirlwind.’” Embracing the whirlwind of success, the singer used the word to inspire her new album.
