While many aspiring singers want nothing more than to capture the spotlight for a single moment, Willie Nelson held that spotlight for nearly seven decades. Bringing outlaw country to the forefront, the country singer produced over 70 studio albums. And although he is 91 years old, he continues to make new music. In November, Nelson will release his newest album, Last Leaf on the Tree. Loving his time on stage, the icon recently needed some time off to focus on his health. Eventually returning, Nelson once discussed his long career in country music and how he quits every night.

Last December, Nelson sat down with CBS News to open up about a plethora of topics including his career, songwriting, and even reincarnation. Speaking with host Anthony Mason, the singer was asked what he gets from songwriting. Putting it simply, Nelson insisted, “Accomplishment.” The singer continued, “I haven’t quit. I’m 90, maybe I should.”

Willie Nelson Promises “I’ll Be Back In A Minute”

After sharing a laugh, Nelson continued the conversation when speaking about his age and if he ever wanted to retire. Not holding back, the star said, “Oh yeah, I quit every night. After every tour, I say this is it. And then I get the urge again to go back.” While wanting to quit, he explained how he continues to have a “desire” to write music and entertain fans.

Although countless artists and songwriters dread suffering from writer’s block, Nelson appeared to find it part of the process. Having written numerous songs over the years, he found the best way to beat writer’s block was to “wait.” He noted that not writing for a few days allowed those creative juices to flow once again.

With the country legend celebrating another birthday in April, Nelson often found himself pondering life and what the future holds. According to the singer, he believed life never ended. “I think we probably come back as ourselves, pretty much. I don’t believe life ends, ever.” As for his own life, Nelson considered death to be part of the process. He promised, “I’ll be back in a minute.”
