In recent months, Charles Wesley Godwin has been entertaining his fans and followers on social media with acoustic cover songs. However, Godwin’s three studio albums proved that he is one of the best songwriters in the game today. So, it stands to reason that he has a few original songs in his back pocket as well. Yesterday (September 9), the singer/songwriter shared a snippet of an unreleased song called “It’s Her Move” on social media.

“Straight out of the notebook,” Godwin said of the song. “Wrote this with Aaron Raitiere and Wyatt Flores. Enjoy!” he added. With the monumental combination of talent behind this song, it would be nearly impossible to not enjoy it. Both Godwin and Flores are up-and-comers who have proven themselves to be stellar songsmiths. Raitiere, on the other hand, has been penning songs for and with some of the hottest names in country music for a few years.

“It’s Her Move” tells the story of a young man who travels for a living. While he has had flings with women across the country, one remains in his mind. After turning 30, he decides that it’s time to “lay some roots” and settle down. So, he fires up his rig and sets a course for the girl’s door where he’ll finally get down on one knee and tell her how he feels about her. He has dreams of starting a family with this woman. At the same time, he knows that everything he’s dreaming of hinges on what she says when she sees him. He’s doing more than putting the ball in her court. He’s putting his dreams in her hands and hoping she’ll allow him to make them come true with her.

Charles Wesley Godwin Paints Vivid Pictures with Words

“It’s Her Move” contains details that help to paint a vivid picture and give the listener the sense of traveling across the country. This is a mild departure for Charles Wesley Godwin. Usually, his songs carry a sense of place and that place is Appalachia, the region he calls home. At the same time, coming home to a woman he loves isn’t new subject matter for him. For instance, “Hardwood Floors” is all about getting off the road and going home to the embrace of his then-girlfriend.
