With the MTV VMAs kicking off tonight, Megan Thee Stallion will take over the hosting duties for the celebration. And besides Post Malone and Taylor Swift walking in with the most nominations, the night will feature the return of Eminem. Katy Perry will also receive a special celebration tonight as she will walk home with the Video Vanguard Award. While celebrating singers and their contributions to the music industry, the MTV VMAs know the importance of September 11th and want to make sure the families and victims of that tragic day are always remembered.

Preparing for the MTV VMAs for months, executive producers Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic hoped to host the event on September 10th. And although that seemed possible, the 2024 Presidential Debate threw a curveball at scheduling. Not wanting to stand in the way, Gillmer explained, “With our brand’s decades-long history of leading non-partisan civic engagement, it was important to encourage our fans to tune in to the debate to help make educated decisions ahead of a historic election.”

MTV VMAs Donating Profits To 9/11 Day And Tuesday’s Children

Deciding to move the MTV VMAs just one day, Gillmer found the new date helped them honor those impacted by 9/11. “With the date shift, it again gave us the opportunity to partner with our friends at 9/11 Day to amplify their September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance with tickets to Tuesday’s Children.”

According to a press release, “In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11.”

While the night will include a look into some of the most memorable moments at the VMAs, the profits from the evening will go to 9/11 Day and Tuesday’s Children. Although not the day the VMAs wanted to air on, the new night is more than a celebration of music, but a time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
