Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter took the stage at the MTV VMAs tonight to perform a selection of material from her newest album, Short N’ Sweet. The album dropped on August 23, and included the songs of the summer, “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.”

She performed both tracks at the VMAs, opening with “Please Please Please” by dropping down from the ceiling. She continued with an elaborate outer space backdrop for the song “Taste.” She made out briefly with the alien woman, before launching into “Espresso.” This number included her showing off her impressive range, but also a slew of dancing astronauts.

Her performance was glittery, glitzy, and beautifully weird, as is her tendency. Fans went wild in the audience, as did Carpenter’s peers. She clearly has a grip on pop music that is unmatched.

Sabrina Carpenter Performs at MTV VMAs, Up for Six Awards

Sabrina Carpenter not only performed at the VMAs tonight, September 11, she’s also up for six awards. The pop sensation is nominated for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Art Direction.

Additional performances include Eminem, who opened the night, as well as Megan Thee Stallion, first-time nominees GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro, a pre-show performance by LE SSERAFIM, and a highly anticipated award show debut by Chappell Roan.

Performances by Lisa, Karol G, and Shawn Mendes captivated the audience earlier in the night, and it’s already looking like a successful MTV VMAs.

Carpenter has notably gotten in touch with Chappell to help support her through her meteoric rise to fame, one that Carpenter has also been on. According to Chappell Roan, who recently spoke with Rolling Stone, “We’re both going through something so f—ing hard. She just feels like everything is flying, and she’s just barely hanging on. It was just good to know someone else feels that way.”
