Before taking over as a judge on American Idol in 2018, Katy Perry ruled as the queen of pop. American Idol became her domain for seven years until she decided to step down this May. Now, the “Part Of Me” singer is shifting her focus back to live music. Taking the stage at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Perry showed the world that she is indeed back.

Hovering above the stage, Katy Perry kicked off her career medley with “Dark Horse.” Coming back down to Earth, she segued into “E.T.”

“Yes Katy give us that career medley,” wrote one X/Twitter user.

Perry and the VMAs go way back—literally. The “Woman’s World” singer was born Oct. 25, 1984—just six weeks after the inaugural ceremony aired on Sept. 14.

Tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 11) marked Perry’s fourth time to take the stage at the VMAs. She made her debut in 2009 when she teamed up with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry for a rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” She returned in 2013 for a show-stopping performance of her hit “Roar.” In 2017, the pop star pulled double duty, hosting the ceremony and closing it out with “Swish Swish.”

In addition to performing a medley of her biggest hits, Perry also received MTV’s Video Vanguard Award. The GRAMMY nominee won the VMAs’ other top honor, Video of the Year, in 2011 for “Firework.” This makes her the first person to ever host the VMAs (in 2017) and earn both the show’s marquee awards.

    Bad Rehearsal, Good Performance

Katy Perry managed to pull off her VMAs performance without a hitch, which was a far cry from the rehearsal. Earlier Wednesday, Sept. 11, the “Hot N’ Cold” singer shared a video of herself sporting shiny silver wings as she warmed up for the main event. Prop butterflies flitted above Perry’s head as she tries to sing. Then, the pop star shrieked in terror as they narrowly avoided hitting her in the face.

“AAAGGGHHHHH @vmas TONIGHT AGGGHHHHHHH,” Perry captioned the post.

“This performance will be absolutely epic I can’t wait,” one fan commented.
