Lenny Kravitz Remembers Lat Mother Roxie Roker at the MTV VMAs

As the MTV Video Music Awards kicked off last night, the evening featured more than a few memorable moments as Taylor Swift made history, Katy Perry won the Video Vanguard award, and Chappell Roan dazzled on stage. But while singers and musician celebrated their contributions to the music industry, Lenny Kravitz took a moment to remember his history in music and the long road behind him. Having held the spotlight since the early 1980s, the icon was awarded the Best Rock Video for “Human.”

Throughout his career on stage, Kravitz won more than a few awards for his amazing talent. But during the MTV VMAs, he recalled how he first attended the awards with his mother Roxie Roker. “Wow. This is incredible. I am so grateful. Thirty-one years ago, my mother was with me at an award show, was at the VMAs, so I dedicate this to her. I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life.”

Lenny Kravitz Compares Himself To A Painter

Just last week, Kravitz took a moment to honor his mother on social media. Posting a video of them at the MTV VMAs in 1993, the singer wrote, “Having my beautiful mother by my side at my first #VMAs 31 years ago is a moment I will always cherish. I’m looking forward to taking the stage all these years later where she will be in my heart.”

Back in May, Kravitz released his 12th studio album with Blue Electric Light. Before his new album, the singer revealed his record Raise Vibration in 2018. With his first album in nearly six years, fans praised the rockstar for his ongoing career.

Not wanting to be placed into a certain category, Kravitz shared that his process in the recording studio is that of a painter. “I play whatever I have to play. I Play all the instruments on most of the songs, then Craig Ross also plays guitar on a few songs. That’s the way I’ve always done it. I feel like I paint; I’m a painter. I paint with sound … I had great examples like Stevie Wonder and Prince, so that’s the school that I come from.”
