Margo Price Teams Up with Billy Strings for New Heartbroken Banger “Too Stoned to Cry”

It has been a busy year for Margo Price. Since releasing Strays II last year, she has appeared on the recent Tom Petty tribute album, the Downtown Owl soundtrack, and collaborated with Orville Peck. Today, she released the first single of her own for the year. However, it seems that Price is still in the collaborative spirit. Hear her team up with bluegrass virtuoso Billy Strings on “Too Stoned to Cry” below.

The new track comes as Strings is preparing to release a new album. Unlike many collaborative songs featuring the bluegrass star, Strings added vocals to the track along with his impressive guitar work. Maybe more importantly, it signals the beginning of a new chapter for Price. Penned by Andrew Combs, the song is the perfect example of why country music has long been a comfort for Price in her darkest hours.

Margo Price on Working with Billy Strings “Too Stoned to Cry”

Margo Price talked about the song in a press release. In it, she talked about working with Billy Strings and revealed that she has been itching to record “Too Stoned to Cry” for years. She was just waiting for the stars to align to create the perfect version of the song.

“It was such a joy to work with Billy on this song. He really nailed the vocals and laid down a beautiful lead,” Price shared. “I have wanted to record this song for years now, ever since I heard the writer Andrew Combs sing it. My buddy Beau Bedford and I had been in the studio together working on an Orville Peck track, and I asked him to produce this single for me,” she added. About the instrumentation on the song, she said, “[Bedford] put together a really great band – Beau and I, plus my husband Jeremy Ivey played acoustic, Aksel Coe on drums, Misa Arriaga on Bass, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Joey McClellan on electric. Once we got Billy to add his guitar and singing, I knew this song was gonna be a special recording.”

This is the beginning of a new chapter for Price as she prepares to release more new music in 2025. “I’m still fighting with others to let me be myself, but I know, I’m gonna make this next record the way I want to make it, no matter what it takes,” she said of her forthcoming project.
