Fans of Iconic 80s Rock Band Receive Mysterious Postcards Hinting at First New Music in Nearly 16 Years

Formed in 1978 in West Sussex, England, The Cure brought post-punk into the mainstream. The Brits won over scores of fans with their lyrics about existential dread set to a beat impossible not to dance to. Recently, members of the band began hinting that new material was on the way for the first time since 2008. And The Cure’s latest stunt has fans convinced they’re dropping a new album around Halloween.

The Cure Fans Are Sharing Mysterious Black Postcards On Social Media

Back in 2022, frontman Robert Smith announced that The Cure’s next album already had a name: Songs of a Lost World. Lately, Smith and his bandmates have been playing coy online. On Monday (Sept. 9) the “Lovesong” hitmakers swapped out their social media profile pictures for one with a different logo and all-black background.

Post-punk enthusiasts flocked to social media to speculate: Was the band’s first new album in 16 years, finally on its way? Now, some fans are further substantiating those rumors by posting pictures of postcards they received in the mail.

The all-black cards are embossed to read ‘Songs Of A Lost World,’ with the date 1/11/24 in Roman numerals at the bottom. This translates to Nov. 1, 2024.

In Hispanic cultures, the day after Halloween is known as el Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead. Which seems pretty on brand for The Cure, honestly.

“Come On, New Album:” Fans Are Salivating

On social media, The Cure fans expressed excitement for the long-awaited new album. “Please Robert , the new LP !” one Facebook user wrote, adding emojis of praying hands and a black heart.

“Come on, new album,” another wrote. “I want to hear the studio version of those new songs you played in Leeds 2022.” They were referring to “A Fragile Thing,” “Another Happy Birthday” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye,” which the band debuted during their 2022 tour.

The Cure’s last new full-length album came in 2008 with 4:13 Dream. The band has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. They reached their commercial peak with 1992’s Wish, which made it to No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 200.
