Has life got you down? Struggling to work against the forces that be? You’re not alone. Sometimes, you just need to punch the air to some loud music with lyrics that make you feel seen. Let’s take a look at five awesome rock anthems for anyone who has ever felt like a loser, an underdog, or a little guy stomped under the boot of society.

    1. “Today” by Smashing Pumpkins

One of many great rock anthems from the 1993 release Siamese Dream, this Smashing Pumpkins song has a hopeful vibe to it that has less to do with the lyrics and more to do with the beautifully written melody and use of fuzz. Billy Corgan said that he wrote the song at one of the worst times in his life. We bet anyone who has been in that same headspace will be able to relate to “Today”.

    2. “Loser” by Beck

Beck knew his way around a rock song about being a loser, and this is probably the ultimate cumulation of that talent. This surprise 1994 hit has great instrumentation, nonsensical lyrics, and an otherwise clear message: Don’t let the world make you feel like a loser. “Loser” became a staple stoner-rock classic, and it’s still quite jam-worthy today.

    3. “Common People” by Pulp

Pulp tackled modern (or at least, modern for 1995) social commentary quite well with this hit. It’s one of many classic tunes that made it big during the early Britpop era of the 1990s. It became a standard classic rock song in the UK upon its release, and it also got a bit of love stateside. If you’re pissed off about wealthy elites pretending to be poor for clout, you’ll probably love “Common People”.

    4. “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus

This is the pop rock anthem of all pop rock anthems, and it’s even seen a resurgence in recent years on TikTok. We get why; this killer 2000 track by Wheatus is a classic. It’s definitely on the juvenile side of rock anthems for people who feel like losers. Even though some of its lyrics didn’t age perfectly, it’s still a relatable song about being a loser teen at the turn of the millennium.

    5. “You’re No Rock N Roll Fun” by Sleater Kinney

Sleater Kinney had a clear message with “You’re No Rock N Roll Fun”. And that message was that girl bands should be treated with the same reverence as bands composed of men. It’s a rock anthem for any girl who has been treated worse than her male contemporaries, but it doesn’t get too deep and dark. It’s a fun jam with a strong message.
