It’s going to be a big weekend for Sierra Ferrell. Today, she shared a stripped-down version of “Lighthouse” from her most recent album Trail of Flowers. Tomorrow, she’ll wrap her current United States tour with a hometown show at Charleston, West Virginia’s Clay Center. During the show, the city’s mayor will mark September 28th Sierra Ferrell Day across West Virginia.

Ferrell released Trail of Flowers back in March and has been on the road for much of the year supporting the record. However, she has found time to record alternate versions of a handful of songs from the LP. So far, she has shared new versions of “American Dreaming” and “Dollar Bill Bar.” Today, she adds to the list with a stripped-down solo acoustic version of “Lighthouse” recorded in her friend Gary Paczosa’s studio. West Virginia to Celebrate Sierra Ferrell Day

Today, Sierra Ferrell is an award-winning artist. Most recently, she took home Album of the Year and Artist of the Year at the Americana Honors & Awards earlier this month. She has come a long way from where she started in her home state of West Virginia.

Earlier this year, Ferrell appeared on CBS Mornings to talk about her long road to Nashville. That started with her reason for leaving West Virginia. “I left because I feel like I always had a wild side to me. And I knew that if I stayed there I probably wouldn’t still be alive,” she said. “I left there in search of maybe myself, maybe to find out what else there is, maybe even a reason to live,” she added.

She spent the next few years hitchhiking, hopping trains, and busking on street corners across the United States. A homecoming turned into a relapse that resulted in an overdose. “I died,” she said matter-of-factly, “It was like time didn’t exist anymore. Before I knew it I was in the corner of the room and I was looking down on myself,” she recalled. Shortly after that, she moved to Nashville, worked on her mental health, and began to get more serious about her career.

Now, years later, she’s returning to her home state once again to wrap her current tour. According to a press release, Charleston mayor Amy Goodwin has signed a declaration making September 28th Sierra Ferrell Day in West Virginia. Goodwin and West Virginia delegate Mike Pushkin will present the declaration during her concert tomorrow at the Clay Center.
