The Incidental Beauty of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of The Moon’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Among many of the urban legends in music history, one of the most bizarrely true is the one of Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz. The correlation between the two is incidental yet seems too good to be true, as the music from Dark Side of The Moon perfectly synchronizes with the film. Yes, you heard that right, Pink Floyd fortuitously created a soundtrack for the film 34 years after its release.

Surely some people believe this to be some larger conspiracy about some controlling pop culture puppeteer. Epic as that is, this story is not that. Rather, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and other band members have all denied any intent to synchronize the album with the film.

Frankly, this makes it all the better as it seems this might of been some weird glitch in the simulation (still don’t put on your tin-foil hats). Regardless of the context or the hypothesis, the pairing is as unexpected as french fries and ice cream and is bound to blow your mind.

Moments of Connection

To see the connections one must mute the audio to the film and then start both the Pink Floyd album and the film at the same time. What this entails is the incidentally perfect soundtrack Dark Side of The Moon provides The Wizard of Oz. Two of the more notable moments encompassing this uncanny coincidence are when “Great Gig in The Sky” plays over the tornado scene, as well as the lyrical overlap between “Time” and Dorthy’s great escape from home.

In regards to the first example, the pairing between the song and the scene is simply so impeccable it’s hard to believe it wasn’t purposeful. The energetic climaxes and regressing tempos between the pieces come at the exact moments one would intuitively expect. No words can do justice to just how wildly perfect the two sync up. The latter example proving this crazy correlation is when the lyrics no one told you when to run are sung as Dorthy runs away from home. Simply exquisite, and beyond comprehension. Again, words don’t do it justice. Another example you can look out for is when Dorthy meets The Wicked Witch of The West with Floyd’s pairing of “Us and Them” in the background.

Pink Floyd Insists There is No Connection

All of the members of Pink Floyd have denounced any purposeful connection between the film and their album. Matter of fact, when Roger Waters went on The Joe Rogan Experience he told Rogan, that it was all “B—s—” and “has nothing to do with us.”

David Gilmour expressed the same idea. As he stated, “Some guy with too much time on his hands had this idea of combining ‘Wizard of Oz’ with ‘Dark Side of the Moon,” per Yahoo Entertainment. Despite there being no purposeful connection between the two, the viewing and listening experience is still incredible. So, if you are looking for a different type of entertainment, we highly suggest you give this a try. Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz is a match made in heaven.
