Celine Dion may be an unlikely choice to kick off a Sunday Nigh Football game, but that’s exactly what she did on October 6. She starred in an intro segment which included her 1996 hit song “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” which is possibly how many football fans feel about the return of their cherished sport.

The segment aired before the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers game on Sunday, and Dion paid tribute to the time-honored tradition of Sunday Night Football.

I think my favorite thing about this game is its power to connect who we are, to who we were,” she said in the intro. “To prove that our most powerful memories, our most enduring loves, can stay with us forever.”

This was a particularly apropos statement for this matchup between the Cowboys and Steelers. These two teams haven’t played each other in a primetime game since 1982, with the last time they were matched up at all being the 1996 Super Bowl. Coincidentally, that’s the same year “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” came out. Or, maybe, that’s part of the whole point.

“You know what I’m talking about, right?” Dion continued. “Sometimes, some nights, it all just comes back.” The segment included old footage of the two teams playing each other through the years, including the three Super Bowls they’ve been in together.

Celine Dion continued to wax poetic about the game of football. She also compared the sport to a love affair, quoting from the iconic song.

“Their love affair — well, maybe not love the way I usually sing about it, but still, you know, work with me here,” she joked. “I mean, ‘When you touch me like this. When you hold me like that.’ It kind of fits, no?”

Dion then seriously considered the two teams, again comparing them to her famous song. “But really what beautiful passion it produced, what painful heartbreak it revealed so, so long ago,” she said. “Like so many old flames it always feels right when they’re back together. Don’t you think? Like tonight evoking the kind of magic they once produced.”

She then added, “The Cowboys and the Steelers, a timeless classic on Sunday night.” The segment ended with Dion being doused in Gatorade like a winning coach. This part was interspersed with clips of the actual coaches also getting soaked with Gatorade following a triumphant win.
