Over her decades-long career, former Fleetwood Mac frontwoman and solo artist Stevie Nicks has enjoyed countless collaborations with contemporary artists of the time, from Tom Petty to Lana Del Rey. But only one current pop star earned what many would consider to be the highest praise from Nicks.

Not only did Nicks say this artist was a dream collaborator of hers. She mused that if she had been Nicks’ age in the 1970s, this pop star probably would have been the third woman in Fleetwood Mac.

    Stevie Nicks’ Dream Contemporary Collaboration

During a 2021 tour, Stevie Nicks revealed that she deeply admires Lorde. “I actually don’t know her, and I wish she was here. I was hoping I would get to cross paths with her. But I think she is so very talented. Like, if she had been my age and lived our age, she probably would have been the third girl in Fleetwood Mac. So, if you run into her, please tell her that I’m looking for her.”

Nicks’ on-stage shoutout to Lorde came seven years after the New Zealand singer posted about watching Nicks at a show with her parents. However, Lorde and Nicks didn’t meet that night. As Nicks explained to Stuff in 2017, if she had known Lorde was there, she would’ve invited her backstage. “She didn’t let me know she was coming,” Nicks said.

“I remember it rained the entire show—like Niagra Falls,” the “Dreams” singer recalled. “It was an amazingly difficult yet incredibly euphoric performance. Everybody was in apricot, blue, and pink rain ponchos. But I found out after I left that Lorde and her mom and dad were there. I want her to know I hope she comes this time. Let me buy her mom and dad tickets, and I can meet them all.”

The Fleetwood Mac Frontwoman Found A Kindred Spirit in Lorde

In a 2022 interview for The New Yorker, Stevie Nicks said she liked to gift fellow artists and creatives a small, golden moon necklace as a token of her appreciation. She mentioned having one of those necklaces for Lorde. “I have a moon for her, and it’s in a box with a little note. I’ve never been able to get it to her.”

Nicks described the kindred spirit she sees in the New Zealand artist. “I don’t think Lorde is going to have any problem at all keeping in touch with what she does. I think she’s just as odd as you or me. She’s a strange girl, and so are we. And she’s a really great writer, and she’s really good at doing her own recorded stuff.”

“I don’t think that any real serious songwriter is ever going to have a problem staying connected to the dreams world that allows us to write songs,” Nicks said. From their independent spirit to their witchy aesthetic, it’s clear why the former Fleetwood Mac frontwoman feels such a strong connection to Lorde. Although the two artists haven’t officially collaborated as of this writing, we’re eagerly awaiting the day it happens.
