While often considered a rock band, Mr. Bungle doesn’t appear to fit in any genre of music as the group explored several genres including jazz, disco, funk, and even heavy metal. Formed during the 1980s, the band gained success with the release of albums like Mr. Bungle and California. Like any group, Mr. Bungle went through numerous lineup changes over the years. And recently, former member, Theo Lengyel was found guilty of first-degree murder when he killed his girlfriend.

Presenting their case in California, prosecutors offered evidence that Lengyel was behind the murder of his girlfriend, Alice Kamakaokalani Herrmann, back in December 2023. Investigators started their search for the truth when Herrmann was reported missing. She was scheduled to attend a family gathering in Hawaii but never showed up. Police eventually found her body in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. While presenting their evidence, prosecutors revealed an audio recording of Herrmann fighting for her life.

During the recording, Lengyel is heard playing the piano as he grows irritated with Herrmann for not wanting to go out. Using her phone to record audio of the altercation, Lengyel threatened her, insisting, “I could mash your f**king brain.” Not long after, the verbal assault turned physical as Herrmann gasped for air, fighting for her life.

Discussing the case, District Attorney’s Office Inspector Steven Ryan revealed the audio of the murder wasn’t discovered until a month after the trial started. Able to present the evidence, the Santa Cruz jury found Lengeyl guilty. Concluding the trial, the musician now faces life in prison as his sentencing is scheduled for November.

Thrilled to bring closure and justice to Herrmann’s family, the Capitola Police Department released a statement, reading, “The diligent work of our investigators, in coordination with our law enforcement partners, has led to the apprehension of Theobald Lengyel in connection with the tragic homicide of Alice Kamakaokalani. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.”

Those who knew Herrmann thanked investigators and prosecutors for their hard work, writing, “My heart goes out to Alyx’s family. She had the most gentle soul. This is heartbreaking. Thank you to all of the agencies that contributed to this arrest.”
