SGTC adds two new associate of applied science degree options

South Georgia Technical College continues to “Bridge the Gap” in workforce education by adding additional credentials students can utilize to meet individual and local labor-market needs, announced SGTC President Dr. John Watford.

SGTC is adding the Associate of Applied Science in Technical Studies and the Associate of Applied Science in Allied Health degrees beginning Fall Semester.  Classes begin August 15 ^th and it is not too late to apply and earn your first or an additional award from South Georgia Tech.

The Technical Studies Associate Degree program is designed to prepare students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s technical industry fields.  Students can earn this degree by taking 15 hours (5 three-hour classes) of core if they have already completed 45 hours of occupational classes in one of the following programs:  Aircraft Structural Technology, Aviation Maintenance, Avionics, Air Conditioning Technology, Automotive Technology, Auto Collision Repair Technology, Barbering, Cosmetology, Diesel Equipment Technology, Drafting Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, Industrial Mechanical Systems, Industrial Systems Technology, Precision Machining and Manufacturing, Motorsports Vehicle Technology, and Welding and Joining Technology among others.

“This is an excellent way for students who have completed an occupational program to come back and take core classes to earn an Associate Degree in Technical Studies,” explained SGTC President Watford.  “We know there are many students who would like to earn this additional degree in order to further their ability to climb the career ladder at their current job or to give them additional career opportunities.  Now is a great time to get started toward that goal.”

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Technical Studies can be completed on-line or in-person.  Individuals with 45 hours of approved occupational classes can successfully complete 15 hours of core classes to receive the associate degree.  The core classes needed include: ENGL 1101 – Composition and Rhetoric; PSYC 1101 – Introductory Psychology or SOCI 1101 – Introduction to Sociology; MATH 1101 – Mathematical Modeling, MATH 1103 – Quantitative Skills and Reasoning or MATH 1111 – College Algebra; two humanities from:  ENGL 2130 – American Literature, MUSC 1101 – Music Appreciation, ART 1101 – Art Appreciation, HUMN 1101 – Introduction to Humanities, and then a general education core elective from the list above not taken.

Those same classes can be taken by students in the Practical Nursing and other medical programs to earn the Associate of Applied Science in Allied Health degree.  SGTC is also applying for the LPN to RN Bridge program.  Licensed Practical Nursing students interested in that program can go ahead and sign up for Associate of Allied Health degree and get their core classes completed.

In addition to those new associate of applied science degrees, SGTC is also making changes in the Cosmetology, Barbering and Practical Nursing curriculum.  Students in each of these programs will no longer have to take core classes.  They can complete the programs Cosmetology for Licensure, Master Barber, and Practical Nursing Certificate programs with occupational classes only.
