Reach Summer camp luncheon held July 11

REACH Summer Camp, an afterschool program, held a luncheon for parents on Thursday July 11, meeting at the cafeteria of Fresh Start Academy.

The afterschool program provides education for students during the summer, along with trips to various educational venues. Ashton A. Dice gave the invocation, and Sarai Sellers gave the welcome. The Rise of the Phoenix was sung by Simeon Smith. The students were divided into four houses, Kukosha House, meaning “worth,” Tsika House, meaning “habits,” and Rukudzo House, meaning “respect,” and Kutarisira House, meaning “expectations.” Students from each house performed a chant for their group. Several students received recognitions, including the category most books read.

There was a presentation on the Girl Power and Boy Power program, which stands for proving our worth while earning respect. Pastor Larry B. Sims Sr. gave an address, speaking to what a joy it was to teach the children. He talked about the program’s emphasis on exposure, saying that when children feel confined to a small City they sometimes have trouble dreaming. He told how the program is funded primarily through generosity, and asked those listening to consider giving. He quoted Mohammed Ali; “service is the writ you pay to stay on the Earth.”
