Wind Chill Warning Triggers Over 300 Flight Cancellations in Chicago

As the nation braces itself for bone-chilling temperatures, the Chicago area finds itself in the grip of an extreme cold front, resulting in more than 300 flight cancellations on Monday morning. The culprit? A persistent wind chill warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), set to last until noon on Tuesday.

At 6:30 a.m., O'Hare International Airport reported just under 200 flight cancellations, while Midway Airport saw another 161 cancellations. The wind chill warning is not the only concern, as even after its expiration on Tuesday, a wind chill advisory will persist through 9 a.m. Wednesday for several counties, according to NWS officials. While the majority of public schools were already closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, others took the extreme step of canceling classes or transitioning to e-learning due to the perilous cold.
