In a devastating turn of events, the music world mourns the loss of two talented individuals, Jose "Luis" Vasquez and John "Juan" Mendez, who were discovered dead in a suspected fentanyl overdose in a downtown Los Angeles loft. The tragedy unfolded last week when the bodies of Vasquez, 44, known for his contributions to the post-punk project the Soft Moon, and Mendez, 46, a popular Los Angeles DJ performing as Silent Servant, were found alongside Simone Ling, 43, identified as Mendez's partner.

The discovery was made at Mendez and Ling's residence at the Pacific Electric Lofts on Main Street after a welfare check initiated by Vasquez's wife, revealing the grim reality of the suspected overdose. Authorities found drug paraphernalia at the scene, prompting an investigation into a possible fentanyl overdose.

The news of Vasquez's death reverberated through the music community, with the Soft Moon's Facebook page expressing deep sorrow, calling it a "huge loss" and stating, "our hearts are broken." The impact of their deaths goes beyond personal loss, shedding light on the broader issue of drug-related fatalities. Captain Raul Jovel, overseeing the LAPD's Central Division, emphasized the societal nature of this problem, revealing that the division investigates multiple overdose deaths on some days.

The investigation is ongoing, with LAPD Central Bureau homicide handling the case. The final causes of death may take three to six months to determine, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office.

Vasquez, born in East Los Angeles, had a musical journey that started at the age of 15 when he formed his first punk band. He achieved success with the Soft Moon, described as an "unflinching mix of industrial and post-punk." Despite his global success, Vasquez faced personal challenges, as reflected in the group's latest album, "Exister," where he delved into family traumas.

Mendez, a pioneer in L.A.'s underground techno music scene, co-founded influential local record labels and toured European venues. His 2018 album, "Shadows of Death and Desire," explored the toll of a life in club music on one's spirit. Mendez recently released a new single but had taken a break from the demanding lifestyle of a full-time DJ, shedding light on the challenges and pressures of the nightlife culture.

As the music community grapples with this tragic loss, the deaths of Vasquez and Mendez serve as a stark reminder of the broader issues surrounding substance abuse and its impact on artists' lives. The investigation will hopefully provide insights into addressing these challenges and preventing further losses in the industry.
