In a groundbreaking announcement that promises to reshape transportation infrastructure in Geneva County, Governor Kay Ivey revealed plans for the long-awaited widening of State Highway 52. This significant endeavor, spearheaded by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), marks a pivotal moment for the region, with a staggering investment of nearly $23 million. Set to commence imminently, this venture represents the most substantial road or bridge project undertaken by ALDOT in 2024.

State Senator Donnie Chesteen expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the historical significance of this initiative. "This is the first major highway project, state highway project, that we’ve had in Geneva County in over 16 years," he remarked, underlining the transformative potential of the endeavor.

Phase one of the project, spanning 3.4 miles from Malvern to Slocomb, signifies merely the initial step in a broader vision for enhanced connectivity and accessibility. However, as Senator Chesteen emphasized, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. "The second phase will be from Hartford to Slocomb. That will be a five-lane. It will not be divided, but it’ll be five lanes," he elucidated. "That should be led by mid to late 2025, so we’re looking at probably three and a half years from the time dirt starts moving until we can drive on asphalt on both these phases of the project."

Echoing sentiments of optimism, State Representative Jeff Sorrells underscored the manifold benefits of improved infrastructure. "We’ve got a lot of great people that live in rural Alabama and in our rural communities," he affirmed. "This just gives them an opportunity to be able to connect with four-lane access to our bigger areas, so we’re excited about what it brings."

With anticipation mounting, Senator Chesteen provided insight into the project's timeline, indicating a projected start date ranging from late March to early April. As machinery roars to life and construction commences, the community eagerly anticipates the realization of this ambitious undertaking, poised to usher in a new era of progress and prosperity for Geneva County and beyond.

Stay tuned for further updates as this transformative journey unfolds, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and economic growth across the heart of Alabama.
