Sherwood Man Arrested for Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection

    2024-02-17

In a recent development, the Department of Justice has announced the arrest of a Sherwood, Oregon resident, David Medina, in connection with the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The 34-year-old individual was apprehended in Portland on Friday and is facing serious charges, including a felony for obstruction of an official proceeding, along with several misdemeanors.

According to court documents, not only was Medina allegedly involved in breaching the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to disrupt Congress's certification of the 2020 presidential election results, but he also seemingly boasted about his participation on social media platforms.

The charges against Medina include destruction of government property, entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. These allegations paint a concerning picture of his involvement in the events that unfolded on that tumultuous day.

Court records indicate that publicly available images and videos purportedly identify Medina within a group of individuals unlawfully entering the Capitol. One particularly striking image allegedly shows him attempting to damage a wooden sign above the Speaker of the House's office. The sign, bearing the name "Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi," became a target of destruction, with footage capturing Medina's actions in the midst of the chaos.

Moreover, Medina's apparent acknowledgment of his participation in the insurrection on social media further complicates his legal situation. A post from August 23, 2023, featuring him waving an American flag inside the Rotunda, drew attention to his activities, to which he allegedly responded, "Yes it is. #FBIsFavoriteCitizen."

The court documents also mention the flag Medina was carrying, described as ceremonial with ornate golden fringe and a golden eagle on top, reportedly taken from within the Capitol premises.

As the legal proceedings unfold, this arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to hold those accountable who participated in the events of January 6, 2021. It underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the democratic institutions that form the foundation of our nation.
