Subway Cellist Attacked: Urgent Call for Performer Protection

    2024-02-20

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the vibrant subway performances that have long been a staple of New York City's underground culture have been marred by violence once again. Iain Forrest, a 29-year-old cellist and MD-PhD student at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, recently announced his decision to cease his performances in the subway system after enduring a brutal attack.

Last week, Forrest was struck in the back of the head with a metal water bottle while performing at the bustling 34th Street-Herald Square subway station during rush hour. Shockingly, the assailant used Forrest's own water bottle as a weapon before fleeing the scene, leaving the musician writhing in pain and clutching his instrument.

This disturbing incident marks the second assault Forrest has faced in less than a year, prompting him to take a stand against the lack of protection for subway musicians. In an Instagram post, Forrest expressed his sorrow over having to discontinue his performances, emphasizing that "Two attacks in less than a year is two too much."

Forrest's decision to halt his performances underscores a broader issue plaguing the city's transit system – the safety and security of its performers. He highlighted the alarming frequency of attacks, harassment, and robberies targeting subway musicians, a concern shared by many within the performing community.

In response to these challenges, Forrest has called upon fellow musicians to join forces and advocate for improved security measures. He has urged the formation of a coalition to demand better protection from city authorities, emphasizing the need for comprehensive data collection on crimes against subway performers to effectively allocate police resources.

The assault on Forrest comes amid a concerning uptick in transit crime, with assaults alone rising by more than 10% compared to the previous year. Despite efforts by the NYPD and the MTA to address safety concerns, incidents like this underscore the urgency of implementing tangible solutions to safeguard both performers and commuters.

In the aftermath of the attack, the NYPD Crime Stoppers released video footage of the suspect, offering a reward for any information leading to her arrest. Additionally, the MTA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals within the transit system, condemning the senseless violence perpetrated against Forrest and others.

As Forrest's story garners attention, it serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those who bring art and music to the public spaces of New York City. His courageous stance against adversity underscores the resilience of the artistic community and the collective effort needed to create a safer environment for performers to share their talents with the world.
