In a long-awaited decision, a jury has awarded more than $13.5 million to the family of DeAngelo Green, who tragically lost his life in a 2018 crash involving a speeding D.C. fire truck. The verdict, which found the District to be "grossly negligent," marks a significant moment in a legal battle that has spanned several years.

The incident, which occurred on March 9, 2018, shook the community when a speeding fire engine, responding to an emergency with lights and sirens, disregarded a red light and collided with Green's vehicle at an intersection in Northeast D.C. The impact not only claimed Green's life but also injured two others, including a pregnant woman.

Following the crash, Green's widow, T’Anita Coles-Green, took legal action against the District, seeking justice for her husband's untimely death. Represented by attorney William Lightfoot, the family persevered through legal proceedings, facing numerous challenges and twists in the case.

The initial narrative surrounding the crash placed blame on Green, citing a D.C. police report that faulted him for failing to yield to the fire truck and alleged drug use based on a toxicology report. However, subsequent trials revealed crucial evidence indicating that the fire truck driver had violated department protocols by speeding and not adequately slowing down at intersections.

Despite attempts to undermine Green's character by highlighting past drug use and incarceration, the jury's verdict underscored the value of his life and his role as a caring parent to his six children. While no compensation was awarded for lost earnings, the substantial sum granted under a wrongful death claim acknowledges the irreplaceable loss suffered by the Green family.

The outcome of this case extends beyond financial restitution; it sends a clear message to the D.C. Fire and EMS Department about the importance of upholding safety protocols and ensuring accountability for negligent actions. Moreover, it provides a semblance of closure for the Green family, offering resources for the children's future education and stability.

As the District considers appealing the verdict, the significance of this decision reverberates throughout the community, reaffirming the principle that every life has value and deserves justice, regardless of circumstance. While the firefighter involved was cleared of criminal wrongdoing, the legal resolution serves as a reminder of the profound impact of negligence and the importance of holding accountable those responsible for preventable tragedies.
