Sewage spill in NW Portland contaminates Cedar Mill Creek

    2024-02-26

A recent environmental mishap has caused concern in northwest Portland as approximately 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Cedar Mill Creek. According to reports from Environmental Services, the incident occurred on Saturday, originating from a city maintenance hole on private property off Northwest Frazier Circuit.

The spillage, believed to have been caused by grease accumulation, prompted swift action from cleanup crews. Despite their efforts, the sewage made its way into Cedar Mill Creek, prompting city officials to issue warnings to residents. People were advised to avoid the water downstream of Northwest Miller and Northwest Cornell Road, while also ensuring that pets steer clear of the contaminated area until further notice, extending through Monday.

Environmental Services emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal, citing common culprits for sewage overflows such as household debris and grease. Items like cooking grease and wet wipes, when disposed of down drains, can lead to blockages in pipes, ultimately resulting in overflows like the one witnessed in this instance.

"The most common causes of sewage overflows are pipes clogged with household debris, such as cooking grease that is sent down kitchen drains or wet wipes that are flushed," stated Environmental Services. "Both belong in the trash, not down the drain."

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the critical need for responsible waste management practices within our communities. It underscores the detrimental impact that improper disposal of household waste can have on our environment and local waterways.

As efforts continue to mitigate the effects of the spill and restore the affected area, it is imperative for residents to remain vigilant and adhere to the precautionary measures issued by city officials. By collectively adopting sustainable habits and taking proactive steps to safeguard our surroundings, we can work towards preventing similar incidents in the future and preserving the health of our ecosystems.
