In a startling series of events across Manhattan, at least seven unsuspecting pedestrians fell victim to a bike-riding thief who brazenly snatched cell phones right out of their hands. The spree, which unfolded on sidewalks and in parks, has left authorities and residents on high alert, as the audacious thief continues to evade capture.

The first reported incident occurred just outside Union Square Park, where a 17-year-old boy was targeted around 3:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. The thief swiftly grabbed the teen’s phone before making a quick getaway on his bicycle. Subsequent thefts unfolded throughout the day, with victims ranging from a 53-year-old woman on the Upper East Side to a 30-year-old woman inside Washington Square Park.

The thief, described as wearing a distinctive yellow and black winter coat, struck again on February 19 after a brief hiatus, targeting victims in multiple neighborhoods across Manhattan. His modus operandi remained consistent: approaching pedestrians, snatching their phones, and fleeing the scene on his bicycle.

Among his victims were a 35-year-old woman near Chelsea Park, a 29-year-old man near New York University, and a 28-year-old woman at Bowery and East 4th Street. Each incident left victims shocked and shaken as their possessions were forcefully taken from them in broad daylight.

Authorities have released images of the suspect, estimating him to be between 20 and 30 years old, standing at around 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds. The NYPD urges anyone with information to come forward and assist in apprehending the perpetrator, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in combating such crimes.

This recent wave of thefts adds to a concerning trend of similar incidents plaguing the city. Notably, a crew of moped-riding robbers associated with the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua has been linked to previous thefts, while another incident involving a Citi Bike-riding thief in Central Park has raised further alarm.

As authorities work to address these challenges, it serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves against opportunistic thieves. By staying aware of their surroundings and safeguarding their belongings, individuals can help deter such criminal activity and contribute to a safer community for all.
