As spring approaches, the Chicago area finds itself once again in the grip of turbulent weather patterns. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago issued a warning of impending severe weather, urging residents to stay vigilant as heavy downpours, hail, and strong winds threaten the region. The possibility of tornadoes looms, though the likelihood remains relatively low.

Meteorologists Francie Swidler and Alicia Roman, from the NBC 5 Storm Team, provide the latest insights into the evolving weather situation. Roman emphasized that while the storms anticipated for Monday aren't expected to match the intensity of last week's tornado outbreak, they still carry the potential for significant impact.

"We're not looking at a severe weather outbreak like last week," Roman stated. "But 1 to 2 storms could be strong to severe."

The forecast indicates that the inclement weather won't make its presence felt until the afternoon hours, with the morning set to begin warm and dry. However, some areas experienced patchy, dense fog during the early hours, reducing visibility and adding to the atmospheric complexity.

Temperatures are expected to soar, reaching well above average for this time of year, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. However, this warmth is likely to fuel the development of storms later in the day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms anticipated to roll in from western Illinois, progressively advancing eastward.

Come late afternoon, heavy downpours and storms are forecasted to sweep through Lake and DuPage counties, with the threat extending into the evening as the system progresses into Cook and LaSalle counties. The NWS warns of the potential for hail, strong winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, and, albeit low, the possibility of tornadoes.

Despite the severity of the expected weather, the NWS categorizes most storms as strong but not severe. Nevertheless, residents are urged to exercise caution and stay informed as the situation evolves.

Following the passage of the storm system, temperatures are anticipated to drop, though remaining slightly above average. The midweek outlook suggests temperatures hovering in the upper 40s to low 50s, offering a respite from the preceding weather tumult.

As always, it's crucial for residents to stay tuned to local weather updates and heed any advisories or warnings issued by authorities. By staying informed and prepared, the community can weather the storm together, ensuring safety and resilience in the face of nature's unpredictability.
