    Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for July 8-14

    Last week saw the Ames softball team crush Sioux City North in the Class 5A Region 1 semifinals by an 18-4 score on July 13 at Sioux City, and the Ames baseball team drop a 1-0 heartbreaker to Dowling Catholic in the 4A Substate 4 quarterfinals.

    Both Gilbert teams advanced in postseason play. The Gilbert softball team defeated Webster City by an 11-6 score in the 4A Region 2 semifinals on July 13 at Gilbert and the Tiger baseball team defeated Benton Community by a 2-1 score in the 3A Substate 6 quarterfinals on July 12 at Benton.

    Collins-Maxwell is headed to the 1A Region 3 championship game in softball. The 1A No. 5 Spartans crushed Glidden-Ralston by a 12-0 score in the quarterfinals on July 10 and Ankeny Christian by a 7-0 score in the semifinals on July 12, with both games taking place at Collins.

    The Roland-Story baseball team advanced to the 2A Substate 2 championship game after winning the District 4 championship with victories over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (9-1) and Dike-New Hartford (4-1).

    Kate Nigh, Ames

    Nigh helped the Ames softball team roll past Sioux City North in the 5A Region 1 semifinals by smacking her first home run of the season.

    Nigh went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs.

    Tovaria Smith, Gilbert

    Smith played a big role in the Gilbert softball team's 4A Region 2 semifinal victory over Webster City.

    Smith went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and one steal against the Lynx. She also made four assists and three putouts at second base.

    Emma Pasquariello, Collins-Maxwell

    Pasquariello came up with timely hits during both 1A Region 3 victories by the Collins-Maxwell softball team last week.

    Pasquariello went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs and RBIs apiece against Glidden-Ralston. In the victory over Ankeny Christian, she was 2-for-3 with a double, run and three RBIs.

    Kyra Anderson, Ames

    Anderson homered in her final at-bat at the Ames High Softball Field for the Ames softball team during the Little Cyclones' 4-2 loss to Gilbert on July 8.

    Anderson also had a big game during Ames' 5A Region 1 semifinal rout of Sioux City North. She went 4-for-5 with four doubles and three RBIs.

    Emma Latterell, Gilbert

    Latterell went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and she made 10 putouts with no errors at first base for the Gilbert softball team during its regional win over Webster City.

    Earlier in the week Latterell was 1-for-2 with a walk and she had six putouts in the win over Ames. In an 8-1 victory over 3A No. 8 Prairie City-Monroe on July 9 at Monroe, Latterell homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers.

    Ean Eldred, Gilbert

    Eldred came up clutch with the bat for the Gilbert baseball team during its 3A Substate 6 quarterfinal victory at Benton.

    Eldred was 1-for-3 with a double and he drove in both Tiger runs.

    Carter Geffre, Ames

    Geffre was brilliant in defeat for the Ames baseball team during its 4A Substate 4 quarterfinal loss at Dowling Catholic on July 12.

    Geffre gave up one run on five hits and he struck out 12 batters with no walks in seven innings of work. He also singled once in three at-bats on offense.

    Brett Schmitz, Roland-Story

    Schmitz came up big on the mound in both 2A District 4 victories for the Roland-Story baseball team.

    Schmitz threw five scoreless innings, and he gave up just two hits with eight strikeouts and five walks in the victory over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. He gave up one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings to get the victory over Dike-New Hartford.

    Drake Hinson, Nevada

    Hinson threw a strong game in defeat for the Nevada baseball team during its 2-0 3A Substate 6 quarterfinal loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier on July 12 at Cedar Rapids.

    Hinson held the Saints to two runs on five hits in seven innings. He ended up with two strikeouts and three walks.

    Jake Knoll, Roland-Story

    Knoll delivered a timely extra-base hit for the Roland-Story baseball team during both of its 2A District 4 victories.

    Knoll doubled and drove in a run versus Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. He tripled and scored a run in the victory over Dike-New Hartford.
